ELECTRIC CARS
In 1900, 38 percent of all American cars were powered by electricity; today, with 115,000,000 cars on the road in the USA, only about 5,000 of them are electric – cars 0.004% of the total. Why has this happened? The advantages of the electric car are obvious: it is quiet and it does not pollute the atmosphere. Of course, in 1912, with 38,842 cars on United States roads, pollutionwas not a problem. But today it certainly is, and yet, there are very few electric cars.
The main reason is the battery. At present, with about 16 ordinary batteries, weighing close to 250 kilos, an electric car will run about 90 kilometers. It then needs four to eight hours to recharge its batteries. This means that the car is not practical for long journeys at the present time; even if therewere plenty of electric service stations on the highway, you would still have to stop every 90 kilometers and wait for a minimum of four hours. However, 90 percent of all car trips are shorter than 60 kilometers – shopping, taking messages, delivering goods, going to work, taking children to school – and what most car drivers want is a car that is economical and trouble – free for short journeys. Ifyou only drive 50 kilometers a day, and then leave the car to recharge its batteries all night (with cheaper electricity available at night in many countries), an electric car might suit you very well.
The battery problem may be solved in the next 20 years anyway. There is now a zinc chloride battery which can do 280 kilometers on a single charge, and an aluminium – air – water battery is beingdeveloped which may do as much as 5,000 kilometers on once charge. But that will not be available until the late 1990’s.

LA RAZÓN PRINCIPAL ES LA BATERÍA. EN LA ACTUALIDAD, CON CERCA DE 16 BATERÍAS CONVENCIONALES, QUE PESA CERCA DE250 KILOS, UN COCHE ELÉCTRICO SE DESARROLLARÁ ALREDEDOR DE 90 KILÓMETROS. A CONTINUACIÓN, NECESITA CUATRO A OCHO HORAS PARA RECARGAR SUS BATERÍAS. ESTO SIGNIFICA QUE EL COCHE NO ES PRÁCTICO PARA VIAJES LARGOS EN EL MOMENTO PRESENTE, AUNQUE HABÍA UN MONTÓN DE ESTACIONES DE SERVICIO ELÉCTRICO EN LA CARRETERA, A PESAR DE ELLO TIENE QUE PARAR CADA 90 KILÓMETROS Y ESPERAR UN MÍNIMO DE CUATRO HORAS. SINEMBARGO, EL 90 POR CIENTO DE TODOS LOS VIAJES EN COCHE SON MÁS CORTOS DE 60 KILÓMETROS - DE COMPRAS, TOMAR MENSAJES, LA ENTREGA DE BIENES, IR A TRABAJAR, LLEVAR A LOS NIÑOS A LA ESCUELA - Y LO QUE LA MAYORÍA DE LOS CONDUCTORES DE AUTOMÓVILES QUE QUIERO ES UN COCHE QUE ES ECONÓMICO Y SIN PROBLEMAS - LIBRE PARA TRAYECTOS CORTOS. SI SÓLO CONDUCIR 50 KILÓMETROS AL DÍA, Y LUEGO DEJAR EL COCHE PARARECARGAR SUS BATERÍAS DURANTE TODA LA NOCHE (CON ELECTRICIDAD MÁS BARATA DISPONIBLE EN LA NOCHE EN MUCHOS PAÍSES), UN COCHE ELÉCTRICO PUEDE QUE TE VAYAN MUY BIEN.
EL PROBLEMA DE LA BATERÍA PUEDE SER RESUELTO EN LOS PRÓXIMOS 20 AÑOS DE TODOS MODOS. EN LA ACTUALIDAD EXISTE UNA BATERÍA DE CLORURO DE ZINC QUE PUEDE HACER 280 KILÓMETROS CON UNA SOLA CARGA, Y UNA DE ALUMINIO - AIRE - AGUA DE LA BATERÍA SEESTÁ DESARROLLANDO LO QUE PUEDE HACER TANTO COMO 5.000 KILÓMETROS A CARGO UNA VEZ. PERO ESO NO ESTARÁ DISPONIBLE HASTA FINALES DE 1990.
