In ''The Lemon Orchard'', written by Alex la Guma,we read How has La Guma conveyed his anti-racism message through "The Lemon Orchard" wealso notice how a “Coloured” man was being abused verbally and physically by five white men who have kidnapped him. The black man treat tocontrol his fear, despite the abuse, in order to keep his dignity intact.Perhaps the most noticeable theme in the story is racism.
The first form ofabuse to black man in the story is the verbal. The evidence is clearly shown when the hostage is being insulted by the white men. He is called“dumb”, “hotnot”, “kaffir” and “bastard” by the men. They force him to answer their insulting questions and force him to refer to them as “bass”,which show that they are superior to him.
Another form of abuse the black man is physical abuse.when he was really cold at night The leaderhit him with a gun and it is clear that they will beat him further, when they say “we will give him a better hiding”. These descriptions show thetheme of racist behaviour.
La guma make as think that the nature is a very important element in these story. Like in the first paragraph...”and the moon was hidden behind long high parallels of cloud which hung like suspended streamers of dirty cotton wool in the sky.” here the writeris suggesting that the moon refuses to witness what will occur and hides itself behind the cloud. That way it shows his sadness toward racism.
