The Kissing Balconies in Guanajuato Mexico
On any given day in the city of Guanajuato, Mexico, crowds of couples flock to Callejon del Beso, an alleyway so narrow that loversstanding on balconies protruding from buildings on opposite sides of the street can share a kiss. Though many climb to the top to memorialize their kiss in a photo, few know the story behindthe kissing balconies.
According to legend, Dona Ana was courted by a young lover, Don Carlos. Upon learning of the romance, Ana’s father, an uncompromising and violent man, threatenedto send her to a convent or arrange for her to marry an old and wealthy Spanish nobleman in order to increase their depleted finances. Dona Brigida wept and prayed but nothing helped.Finally, she sent a letter to Don Carlos with the sad news.
Frantic, Carlos sent a message back to his lover, begging her to meet so they could find a solution to their problem. He paid asum of gold to the owners of the houses with the twin balconies and instructed Ana to climb to the balcony on one side of the street while he climbed up to the other side. At theappointed time the lovers joyfully reunited but their bliss was soon interrupted by violent words uttered from within the house; Dona Ana’s father had learned of the secret tryst and had cometo stop it. He threw the owner of the house aside, ran up the stairs and sunk a dagger into the breast of his daughter.
As Don Carlos felt the life ebbing from his beloved, he planted atender kiss on the pale, lifeless hand, branding the street forever with the name Callejon del Beso – the Kissing Alley. These days the only danger associated with climbing to thebalconies lies in how much the locals will charge you to have your photo taken kissing while leaning out high over the street.
