The pritzker architecture prize was established by the Hyatt foundation to honor annuly a living architect whose built work demostrates a combination of those qualities of talent, visión and committment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built enviroment throgh prestigious award or as the nobel of architecture.
The prize take its name from the thepritzker family, whose international business interests are headquartered in chixcago. They have long been known for their support of educational, religious, socila, welfare, scientific, medical and cultural activities.
Jay A pritzke, president of the Hyatt foundation, explains, we had become particularly interested in architecture because we were so heavily involved with the plannnig, designand constrution of hotels around the world. We bécame keenly aware of just how little regard there was for the art of architecture.
By honoring living architetcs for their achievements, he continues, we felt we could encourage and stimulate not only a greater awareness of the buildings around us, but also inspire greater creativity within the architectural profession.
The prize wasestablished in 1979 with many of its procedures and rewards modeled after the nobels. Laurates of the pritzker architecture prize receive a 100 grant , a formal citation certifícate, and since 1987, a bronze medallion. Prior to that year, a limited edition henrty moore sculpture was presented to each lauréate.
The bronze medallion is base on designs of Louis suvillan, fame chicago architect generallyacknowledged as the father of the skyscraper. On one side is the name of prize. On the reverse, three Word are inscribed, firmenss, commodity and delight, these are the three condition referred to by Henry Wotton in his 1624. Treatise, the elements of architecture, which was a translation of thoughts originally set down nearly 2000 year ago by marcus vitruvius in his ten books on architecture,dedicated to the roman emperor ausgustus . wotton, who did the translation when he was englands first ambassador to venice, used the completed quote as: The end is to builds well. Well-building hath three conditions: commodity, firmness and delight.
It was determined that nominations would be accepted from all nations; from gorvernment officials, writers , critics, academicians, fellow architects,architectural societies, or industrialists, virtually anyone who might have an interest in advancing great architecture. The prize is awarded irrespective of nationality, race creed, or ideology.
The nominating procedure is continuous from year to year, closing in january each year. Nominations received afther the closing are automatically considered in the following calendar year. There are wellover 500 nomiees from more tan 45 countries to date. The final selection is made by an international jury with all deliberatrion and voting in secret.
Carleton Smit served as secretary to the jury from 1979 until his death in 1984, at which time brendan gill, new yorker magazine architecture critic was appointed. Gill served troungh 1987. Bill Lacy, architect and president of the StateUniversity of new york at purchase, as well as advisor to the J. Paul Getty trust and many ofther foundations, was named secretary to jury in 198.
From 1979 through 1986, the late Arthur Drexler, who was director of the city, was a consultant to the jury. Stuart wrede, who replaced Mr drexler at moma was acting consultant to the jury 1987 and 1988.
