ABSTRACT
This paper is a summarized version of the investigation report written by the authors, referred
todata recollection of actual police procedures in Regions of Los Rios and Los Lagos, Chile,
related to suspect identification under criminal investigations. Simultaneously, the problems
involved onthese procedures were identified and described historically, as well as the visibility
of its difficulties in Chile and the scientific consensus in relation to eyewitness identification.
Using all theinformation obtained, a set of proposals are made in order to improve identification
procedures, considering our local circumstances, as a way to diminish the risk of error that has
been described.Key words: Recognition, eyewitness, memory, identification, criminal investigation.
