introduction

This report is about a famous French political thinker, Charles de Montesquieu. Charles de Montesquieu is famous for a lot of his publications and works, but he is mostly known asthe creator of a system called “Separation of Powers” and “Checks and Balances”. Separation of Powers is to divide the government into three branches legislative, executive and judicial. Checks andBalances distributes the power equally through the three branches, it ensures that no branch of government has (or is supposed to have) the power to act by its own without at least advising or gettingconsent from the other two branches.

Biography of Charles de Montesquieu

Charles de Montesquieu (18 January 1689 – 10 February 1755), was a French political thinker and social critic whose ideaswere a combination of conservatism and progressivism. In 1716 he inherited from his uncle the title Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu and the office of Président à Mortier in the Parliament ofBordeaux, which was at the time chiefly a judicial and administrative body.
He gained fame in 1721 with his Persian Letters, which criticized the lifestyle and liberties of the wealthy French as well asthe church. However, Montesquieu's book On the Spirit of Laws, published in 1748, was his most famous work. It outlined his ideas on how government would best work. According to Montesquieu there arethree types of government the monarchy, republican and despotism. But he believed that the best type of government is the one that people were able to elect, democracy. But he said that a successfuldemocracy depended on maintaining the right balance of power. He argued that the best government would be the one that is divided into three branches, the executive (who enforces laws), the legislative(who makes the laws) and the judicial (who interpret the laws).
