The Formaldehyde Curtain
Whenever we hear about death, grief and sadness are some of the first things to pop up in mind. But not in Mitford’s mind, he thinks about the process the bodygoes through to look as nice as it does during the mourning ceremony. Most of us don’t even think about what it goes through, some of us don’t even care. Most times the body is deformed in some way,either accidents or any sort of death looking at a body after a couple of hours of death might be a pretty horrible thing to do, and it’s not that important what they do with it as long as it looksnice.
All of us have has had a family or friend die, where we go through the usual ceremony, where we go say our condolences to the family members who are suffering for it and we go say our lastgoodbyes as a symbolic act to the dead body in the coffin. It usually is already a big shock to have a friend or family member die, either if it is by natural causes, which could have been foreseen orbecause of accidents or any other cause. When someone close to us dies, we become sad and we feel grief, It is already a hard enough process to accept the death of a loved one to have to see what the bodywould actually have to look like if we didn’t go through with the process it already does. That process is called embalming and it involves a lot of cutting and sucking of guts and many other thingsmost would call “disgusting”. The way some of us see it, it’s a necessary process, imagine having to see the rotten, or sometimes even disfigured body of a loved one a last goodbye, it probably wouldbe a more difficult process than it already is.
Mitford seems to criticize how the funeral director makes the funeral “a real pleasure for everybody concerned”, while many of us might believe it isactually a lot more comfortable. The process of embalming is not the only thing we go through that we would much rather not know about. Lets give food as an example, if some people actually could...
