I. EXTERNAL ANALYSIS
1. The industry
Music has been part of human kind for thousands of years. It is impossible to accurately date its origin. But this form of art and expression has always fascinated people because of the message it conveys, and more importantly because of the feeling it gives when listening to it. This is why music neverdisappeared, but has evolved along with humanity and changes in society. Its growing impact on people’s mind, its worldwide diffusion made possible through technological progress, and the desire of people to access it, made artists understood that they could market their creations and make a living out of them. This process of commercialization started during the 18th century, and has enabled theestablishment of an entire industry around music. The music industry as we know it today has become a huge machine that handles billions of dollars, employs hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, and affects every one of us. It consists in selling compositions, recordings and performances of music. This process involves a wide variety of players. To simplify, we can distinguish three major actors inthe music industry: - Artists. They are the ones who create the product that will then be sold. The entire industry was built around them and relies on them. - Engineers. They handle the recording. Their role is critical since they are in charge of improving sound and effects in recordings, so that it gets as close as possible to perfection. They work along with artists, whose will must be...
