THE

STORY
It all started with a juice stand in Palm Beach. Lilly, a young, sassy New York socialite who had settled in Palm Beach with her husband, Peter Pulitzer, who owned several Florida citrus groves. In the late 1950s, Lilly decided she needed a project of her own. So she began selling Peter’s produce, from the back of astation wagon and quickly expanded to her own tiny juice stand on Via Mizner, just off Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. Lilly’s juice stand was an immediate sensation. But squeezing those fruits made a mess of her clothes and she soon realized she needed a juice stand uniform. So she asked her favorite dressmaker to rustle up a dress that would camouflage the stains. The result? A comfortable sleevelessprinted shift flashing oranges, yellows, greens and pinks (of course). This dress was just perfect for the job, and thereafter became known as Lilly’s Classic Shift. Although Lilly’s customers liked her juice, they absolutely LOVED her dresses! Even her old school chum Jackie Kennedy was hooked on Lillys and as First Lady, Jackie donned a Classic Shift when featured in a Life Magazine. Soon Lillywas selling more dresses than juice. So she decided to slow down on squeezing and focus on making more “Lillys”. Through the next several decades, the Lilly Pulitzer line became the unofficial uniform of the affluent at play. With a brand revival in the early 1990s, Lilly Pulitzer now offers apparel and accessories for ladies, children, and men, as well as a complete home collection. The appeal ofthe Lilly Pulitzer brand continues to grow among those who knew it years ago and those who have just discovered the timeless fun!
