2001 Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán escapes prison in a laundry cart.
2002 Tijuana’s cartel is weakened in Baja California when the police killed Ramon Arellano one oftheir leaders and arresting his brother Benjamin.
2003 Militaries capture Osiel Cardenas the leader from “cartel del Golfo” after he tried to escape causing a shootout.
2004 Taking advantage of thearrest of Cardenas, Guzman sent hired assassins to the cities of Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa and Matamoros on the borderline with the US seeking control of routes inside Texas after some battles betweencartels Guzman was eventually rejected.
2005 Guzman seeks control of Tijuana and of the drug routes inside of California. Violence increased in Mexico. 1,500
2006 Violence extends to Acapulco,Monterrey and Michoacán Calderon takes place as president. He send out militaries and federals trying to stop Guzman’s ambition of having control of Michoacán’s routes. Violence linked to drug dealingincreases. 2,300 some of them tortured and beheaded.
2007 Calderón sent thousands of militaries and policemen to Tijuana and other regions. Mexico sends Cardenas to the US and realized the historic event ofconfiscation 23 tons of cocaine. US president George W. Bush promises 1,400 million dollars of teams to be used in the war against drug dealing in Mexico and South America. 3,000
2008 Guzman fightsagainst the Cartel of Juarez in the frontier of El Paso, Texas a key zone for transporting drugs to the US. Mexico City starts to have violence caused by drug dealing. Mexico captures hundreds ofmembers of drug dealing gangs. 6,300 caused by disputes for routes.
2009 Murders continue to happen. Calderon sends 10,000 militaries and policemen to Juarez but violence continues. The general districtattorney Eduardo Medina Mora is substituted by Arturo Chávez Chávez. In December wins a gun-fight against Arturo Beltran Leyva chief of the Beltran Leyva cartel.
