Welcome to Caribbean Med Student’s Guide to Caribbean Med Schools!In the Caribbean, there are regional medical schools as well as offshore American medical schools. A regional medical schoolgenerally trains a student to practice in the respective country or region to which the school is located. Offshore American medical schools in the Caribbean generally train American or Canadian students tobe licensed to practice in the United States or Canada. Most students attending offshore American medical schools in the Caribbean spend their first two years of medical school on-island studying basicsciences. The remaining two years of the student’s education is then spent in a clinical setting mainly in US teaching hospitals alongside other US medical students. The administrative offices ofoffshore American medical schools are located in the US. Here, I’ve made a directory of all the current off-shore medical schools in the Caribbean.Of the off-shore American medical schools in theCaribbean, five are approved in all 50 states. These schools are American University of the Caribbean (AUC), Ross University, St. George’s University (SGU), Saba University, and American University ofAntigua (AUA, as of 2011). Of these five, four of these, AUC, Ross, SGU, and Saba are NCFMEA-recognized, meaning the US Department of Education have deemed the accreditation standards used to accredit theseschools to be equivalent to the LCME that accredits US medical schools. Of these four, only AUC, Ross, and SGU have Title IV US federal student loans.
