Charlene, whom everybody calls "Charley" is a 12-year-old girl that lives in Eagle Lake. The story starts on the last day of school but she' not attending becauseshe had a car accident when her best friend Amy 's brother Travis gave them a ride home from school. It was raining and he showed off playing "Nascar" and hit a tree.

Charley was in the hospitalfor a while because she had a surgery where they put a rod on her leg from her hip to the knee, living a big scar. After the surgery Charley couldn’t walk so she used a wheelchair then in crutches,then with a lot of help from her "physical terrorist” Tony is now walking with the help of a walking stick she made because she didn’t like canes.

This summer is going to be very different because Amyis not going to be with her having fun and going to the pool. Amy is going to Lake George in upstate New York with Becky Sue Linder to get tennis coaching. Charley is very mad at Amy, because eventhough Amy said it was her mother's idea to go to Lake George, Charley expected Amy to be at her side after the accident especially since her brother cause it. Charley didn't want to talk, respondcallas or emails from Amy.

Charley's father insisted that Charley should make some exercise and not sit all summer so she gains back her strength to be back to normal by the end of summer. She was nothappy at all but decided to go for a walk. She started walking and walking far beyond her usual walks, almost directly across the lake from her house. Suddenly she realizes her leg was hurting bad,it was very hot and she had to go back the same distance. When she was walking bag she sees the dog for the first time sitting like a statute in the base of a sweet gum tree. She knows all Eagle Lakedogs and has never see this one; it was like a Coyote a wild dog. Then he suddenly vanishes.
