Tolstói, Liev Nikoláievich (Leon Tolstói) va ser un escriptor i reformador rus. Considerat un dels grans autors de la literatura universal.
Tolstoi va néixer el 9 desetembre de 1828 en Yásnaia Poliana, al sud de Moscú. Era fill del comte Nokolai Ilich terratinent, i de la princesa Volkonskaia María Nikolaievna. En 1830 mor la seva mare, i quan tenia nou anys va morir el seu pare. Així doncs, en 1841 va passar a viure amb la seva tieta a Kazán. Allà va rebre educació de tutors francesos i alemanys i als 16 anys ingressa a la Universitat Kazán. En un principi començaamb lletres però acaba estudiant lleis. Des de la seva joventut es va esforçar per contribuir la instrucció pública, aquesta idea va inspirar el seu primer llibre “Les quatre èpoques del desenvolupament”.
