When my love swears that she is made of truth
I do believe her, though I know she lies,
That she might think me some untutor'd youth,
Unlearned in the world's false subtleties.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although she knows my days are past the best,
Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue:
On both sides thus is simple truth suppress'd.
But whereforesays she not she is unjust?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O, love's best habit is in seeming trust,
And age in love loves not to have years told:
Therefore I lie with her and she with me,
And in our faults by lies we flatter'd be.
In the sonnet 138 of William Shakespeare, is described the relationship between an experienced man with a vast knowledge in love and a young lady thatsatisfies his masculinity with beautiful lies that he pretends to believe. The whole point of the sonnet is based on lies that they say to each other in order to keep moving forward with their bond. However, each of them knows of the lies that each say, but they refuse to end with this faked love.
Along the sonnet, Shakespeare frequently plays with the words. He endows them with severalconnotations that can be seen in several verses. By digging deeper into the different layers of the sonnet, it can be extracted an endless amount of different meanings and ways to interpret it.
Many times we can see couples that apparent to be perfect for each other, but perhaps they might be living under the same circumstances of the sonnet. Love is not always happiness as it is seen in fairy tales ormovies; instead, it can be complicated.
When my love swears that she is made of truth
It is impossible to keep a lie hidden forever. The first several times it might work, but after a while the little secrets that were kept under the surface will need to come out, and that is the time when everybody will notice it. Many consider love to be blind, but because of it blindness, it doesn’tmean it must be stupid or foolish. Since we were little innocents, we were raised with the idea that real love is based on trust and support, however, once you are already in the real world and not living anymore in fairy tales, it is when you realize that is not as you dreamed before.
As the years go by, it seems that the meaning of love becomes weaker. Blind love is getting to its end, andrelationships are becoming superficial. Where is all that love and trust that with saw in those retro movies when we were little kids? Apparently, real love is hard to find, but if you just give up looking for it, you will end faking love for the rest of your days.
I do believe her, though I know she lies,
There are lies that taste sweet and others bitter, but just because they are sweet, itdoesn’t mean they are not considered lies anymore. When related to relationships, honesty should come first, but when honesty is over, we have no more choices than just to accept little lies.
In the majority of the times, we demonstrate to be cowards, since we don’t want to scratch that top layers of a couple relationship just because it appears to look nice, even though that we know that beneathit, are hidden bitter lies that we pretend to believe.
How can somebody live happy, if knowing that he is surrounded by lies wherever he goes, and even worse when those lies come from persons that you believe you love?
Nothing might be worse than believing that you are loved when you really know that you are not.
That she might think me some untutor'd youth,
Although she knows my daysare past the best,
Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue:
It is easier and more convenient to follow the game of lie, instead of facing the real truth and put everything in the correct spot. As we move forward analyzing the sonnet, it can be perceived that there is no truly love among them, and they are both trying to take the most advantage possible from each other. In his case, he is an...
