“The Color of Water”
(A black man’s tribute to his white mother)As a boy in Brooklyn’s Red Hook projects, James MacBride knew his mother was different. But when he asked her about it, she’d simply say, “I’m lightskinned.” Later he wondered if he was different, and asked his mother if he was different, and asked his mother if he was black or white. “You’re ahuman being.” She snapped. “Educate yourself or you will be a nobody!” And when James asked what color God was, she said, “God is the color ofwater.”
As an adult, MacBride finally persuaded his mother to tell her story, the story of a rabbi’s daughter, born in Poland and raised in the South, who fled to Harlem, married a black man, found a Baptist church, and put twelve children through college. In my opinion the book The Color of Wateris James MacBride’s tribute to his remarkable, eccentric, determined mother and an eloquent exploration of what family really means. The author Jamesmakes proud to be a member of the human race. The greatest sin a person can do to another is to take away that life. Next to that, all the rule andreligions in the world are secondary mere words and beliefs that people choose to believe and kill and hate by. My life won't be lived that way,and neither, I hope, will my children's. I left for New York happy in the knowledge that my grandmother had not suffered and died for nothing.
