Live as a Monster or die as a good Man
In the movie, two options can be represented for the end of the movie to explain the meaning of the last phrase.
Thefirst option is that he is insane. To live as a monster would be the knowledge of killing his wife. It would get him off the island (but he does not want to live knowing that happened). To be the goodman, would to not know of killing his wife, and feel innocent in his own mind. Therefore, he accepts becoming a vegetable, which is why in the end he says him and Chuck need to get off the island; sothat the doctors realize that he has once again relapsed, and the only resort is to give him the lobotomy. Which is his way of dying as a good man, because he will not know of the horrid things he did,he will be innocent in his own mind after he gets the lobotomy.
This means everything that happened before his entrance into the lighthouse, was all a hallucination. He was actually in the hospitalfor 2 years because he killed his wife, everything the doctors tell him in the lighthouse, is true.
The other one can be divided by two possible meanings, one of those is he is sane. To live as amonster would be to give in to the story he is being told by the doctors, and live by making them believe he was insane but now cured. To be the good man, would be to stay true to what he believes anddisregard everything the doctors told him. If he chooses this path, he knows he is going to die, but at least he will die with the integrity that he felt he was right.
Option two is that he is sane. Tolive as a monster would be the position Chuck (his partner) is in now, to give in to the story the doctors are making up. He is going to live, but knowing everything that happens in the hospital makeshim a monster, the living monster. Leonardo is the good man, the one who stays true to what is really happening in the hospital, and doesn’t live as a monster going along with the story he is being...
