History of Moca
Moca is the head municipality of the Espaillat province, located in the northern region of the Dominican Republic, with special historical, economic, tourist, social and culturalvalues. This place has been characterized by being a town entrepreneur and support of its ideals and was there happened large episodes of national life, so it was name Heroic Villace, cradle of heroesand the burial of tyrants.
The origin and meaning of the word Moca is still unknown, but historians have given different versions of this word, among which are highlighted: Jose Gabriel Garci¬a, whosays the name of Moca comes from the existence of a nitaino of the Chieftainship of Magua called mocha, while Emiliano Tejera, indicates that Moca is a word which means tree overlooking the shore ofthe rivers.
There are also different versions of how the first municipalities were formed, one version say that the first population settlement in the municipality took place around the year 1700 inthe section La Ermita,of which we only know that a church was built there, Another version is the one that refers to the marriage between Marquita Ferrera and a Frenchman nicknamed Musy , with thesurname Garcia, who were the first settlers of Moca, They settled on the site known as San Luis, and the people started to call this place The Ferrera Highlands, after Mrs Ferrera. After some time,the couple donated part of their land to the Guzman, Vasquez, Cabrera, Jimenez and Compres families.
Moca made its contribution of sacrifice to take out of our land the Haitian invaders. In thesecombats some distinguished Mocans of the stature of Francisco Antonio Salcedo (Tito), the general José Maria Imbert, played a decisive role, especially in the battle of March 30.
