The Changing of the Guard
Changing the Guard or Guard Mounting is the process involving a new guard exchanging duty with the old guard. The Guard which mounts at Buckingham Palace is called TheQueen’s Guard and is divided into two Detachments: the Buckingham Palace Detachment (which is responsible for guarding Buckingham Palace), and the St. James’s Palace Detachment, (which guards St.James’s Palace). These guard duties are normally provided by a battalion of the Household Division and occasionally by other infantry battalions or other units.
Ceremony of the Keys
The Ceremony ofthe Keys is the traditional locking up of the Tower of London and has taken place on each and every night, without fail, for at least 700 years. The importance of securing this fortress for the nightis still very relevant because, although the Monarch no longer resides at this royal palace, the Crown Jewels and many other valuables still do!
The Geffrye Museum
The Geffrye Museum depicts thequintessential style of English middle-class living rooms. Its collections of furniture, textiles, paintings and decorative arts are displayed in a series of period rooms from 1600 to the presentday.
The Royal Air Force Museum
Opened in 1972 by Her Majesty the Queen and situated on the historic site of Hendon's London Aerodrome in Colindale, our North London Museum is London’s onlyattraction to house over 100 aircraft from around the world including some very early aircraft designs through to the latest modern day jets and military aircraft.
Sir John Soane’s Museum
Soane designedthis house to live in, but also as a setting for his antiquities and his works of art. After the death of his wife (1815), he lived here alone, constantly adding to and rearranging his collections.Having been deeply disappointed by the conduct of his two sons, one of whom survived him, he determined to establish the house as a museum to which ‘amateurs and students’ should have access.
