Have you ever thought about how difficult would be creating a civilization? Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a novel in which an airplane fullof kids fall in an island and all the adults die leaving this group of kids alone waiting for someone to rescue them. In the attempt of the kids to build a civilization by assigning jobs to everyoneand having a leader, they start to believe in an imaginary beast that makes all of them to start acting in a cruel way full of savagery and they loose all their manners. The author use of symbolism andsetting help the author understand how insignificant objects can turn in symbols that are important for the novel and also to see how a place or a situation can change the way a person act or think.Symbolism is when a character, an action, an object or the setting represents something else, The symbolism in the story shows the determination and the faith of the kids to achieve the goalof being rescued from the island. At the beginning of the story, Ralph says: " I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking" (Pg 33). In this passage from the bookRalph states that the conch shell that they found would represent the right to speak and that everyone should hear the speaker. The idea of the leader of the group was excellent because if they hadorganization they could manage the island in a better way. This symbol of the conch shell make feel the reader that the kids want to build a community or civilization in which everyone had a job."Theres another thing. We can help the to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire" (Pg 38).While the kids adaptto the life in the island they create a fire so that the boats could see the smoke of it and have an opportunity of being rescued.
