El pasado simple y el pasado continuo, como sus propios nombres indican, hacen referencia al pasado. Sin embargo las diferencias son las siguientes:

1) El pasado simple empezó y acabó en el pasado

P.ej: She went to the cinema last Saturday

2) El pasado continuo estaba ocurriendo en un momento determinado delpasado

P.ej: On Monday, at 7 o'clock I was watching TV

3) Es muy normal utilizar el pasado simple y continuo en la misma oración, en este caso una acción larga es interrumpida por una acción corta.

P.ej: While I was working on my computer, it broke down

En este ejemplo, una acción larga (trabajar en un ordenador) se ve interrumpida por una acción corta (se estropeó) ¿qué tiene mayorduración, trabajar en el ordenador, o que se estropee? Evidentemente "trabajar", por tanto, esta será la frase que vaya en pasado continuo y la acción corta, que es siempre la que interrumpe a la acción larga irá en pasado simple.
