System of a Down is an American metal band formed Armenian descent in Los Angeles, California, in 1995. At first they called Soil, but later adopted the name System of a Down inspired by the poemVictims of a Down, written by guitarist Daron Maliakan. They are famous for performing songs whose lyrics speak out against child abuse, violence, war, genocide, pornography and sexism, the dominance ofmaterialistic interests in society, social inequalities, physical and ideological, the intolerance and discrimination, among others.
It consists of Serj Takian (composition, voice, keyboards andoccasionally guitar), Daron Malakian (composition, guitar and vocals), Shavo oddajian (bass) and John Dolmayan (drums).
In his five albums released to date, System of a Down uses a wide range ofinstruments, including baritone electric guitars, mandolins, electric sitars, 12-string classical guitars and other instruments of Asia. His most notable influences come from bands that started with heavymetal. They also had influences from genres such as jazz fusion, psychedelic folk rock, funk, blues
In 1994, the band (still considered Soil), Serj Shavo Odadjian met who had attended thesameschool with them being also of Armenian descent. At first, was to be the managerof the band, but decided to discover their talents to form part of the band as bassist.
Afterseparating, Tankian, Odadjian, and Malakian formed a new band that would name"Victims Of A Down" by a poem written by Malakian, the word "Victims" was changed to "System" because they thought Odadjian alteration could attract a wideraudience and that the group wanted his records were kept close to the Slayer.
