Hipsters
In young people’s life, there’s always the existence of urban tribes. People are always finding the way to brand people or stereotype them. It’s in the human natureto find a category for one person. The thing is, we are never fully part of a category, we always have something of some other one.
Two years ago, a new urban tribe was every teen’s dream. The socalled “emos”, were ruling the runways, music, lifestyle, etc. Emos consisted in dressing up in pink and black, wearing bangs and androgynous looks and having negative actions like cutting themselvesto feel pain in order to feel alive. The negative emo movement didn’t last, at least here in Mexico. About three years ago, there was a massive attack to the tribe here in Queretaro. People who wereagainst the emo movement, went to the center of reunion and start beating them. The news went abroad and the movement started disintegrating. Emos nowadays are hardly found.
Today, a new movementappeared. This movement started back in the forties. Young people retook the ideas of what a real “hipster” was and applied it to this new era. Fashion, music and lifestyle have been adapted to this“new” urban tribe.
The word hipster was slang to describe young, middle-class people who were interested in culture on the independent side. Their likes were those of indie rock, independent films, andmagazines that consisted in deeper themes.
In the 40s, the word “ hip” was used to describe the people who were jazz lovers. It then became a word to describe those who loved jazz and became“hipster”. Hipsters were usually middle-class young adults who were looking a lifestyle similar to black jazz musicians. Later on in the 1960s, hipsters were seen as people who were existentialists and were thecategory outside a category, but there was a bit of confusion when the”mods” arrived. Mods are the equivalent to the Beatles, the group that went against the Teddy Boys who were the rockers....
