Contaminación
Se define como la presencia en el ambiente de cualquier agente químico, físico o biológico o de una combinación de varios agentes, en lugares, formas y concentraciones tales quesean o puedan ser nocivos para la salud, seguridad o bienestar de la población, o perjudiciales para la vida animal o vegetal, o impidan el uso o goce de las propiedades y lugares de recreación.  Los contaminantes en el ambiente
Ahora bien, el problema con los contaminantes es su interacción con el mundo que nos rodea. Los agentes "entran" al ambiente: a la atmósfera, la hidrósfera,la geósfera y la biosfera. Estos se llaman medios receptores y, dependiendo de cuál de ellos se trate, los contaminantes se comportarán de manera distinta.
Por ejemplo, los atmosféricos semezclan más rápidamente que aquellos que se encuentran en el suelo. El aire se mezcla de acuerdo a la intensidad y sentido de los vientos por lo cual en lugares en los cuales el movimiento seencuentre reducido, también se reducirá el transporte de los contaminantes.
