Lubricating characteristics The correct lubrication of the gear/pinion assembly not only provides benefits for the user but also for the manufacturers of the equipment (Metso), the gear, thelubricant and, indirectly, the AGMA (American Gear Manufacturers Association). So as to establish a consensus between the groups, the operating parameters used observe the AGMA 9005-D94 standard. Althoughthe standard suggests intervals of up to two hours between applications, Metso’s experience indicates that the time between cycles should rarely be allowed to exceed 15 minutes (5 minutes as applies togrease). Utilizing the AGMA standard and intervals of 15 (or 5) minutes at most as a starting point, the parameters of temperature, contact and surface conditions are used as information for theadjustment of an application of lubricant. As time advances, the temperature parameters are monitored, the surfaces of gear teeth are observed with the use of a stroboscope and, during stops, the teeth arecleaned and any surface discontinuities in gear teeth are evaluated. All of this is used to assess how well the lubricant is working and how its application can be adjusted if necessary.
