Luis Suarez
In 2011, Luis Suarez, Liverpool, was suspended and fined for racial abuse against Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. Suarez was suspended eight games and fined 40,000 pounds ($ 63.000), by the EnglishFootball Association. During a match played at Anfield on October 15 between Manchester United and Liverpool. According to the transcripts of the hearing he referred to Evra as “negro” (black in Spanish) ten times. Reports showed after a hard tackle from Uruguayan Evra asked why you assault me, to which Suarez replied, "Because you're black." There Evra warned him not to continue with the language,Suarez only answer was “I do not talk to black people”. Liverpool coach Kenny Dalglish, who had defended his player after the game on television, and the American owners of the team, one of the greatest of English football have also been criticized after an incident which extended the controversy over racism has tarnished the season. The Liverpool star had been punished following an FA disciplinaryhearing, despite the Anfield club had expressed support for the player. Following that hearing, a regulatory commission of the FA had established that Suarez used "abusive language" that included "references to color" of Patrice Evra, according to the English FA in a statement. Luis Suarez, who was entitled to an appeal against this decision, decided not for reason he wanted to put this behind him.According to the report of the event Evra Suarez told "you hit because you're black", so it is racism. But I wonder if racism also qualifies if you say "hit you because you are white" I do not think the double standard applies. Liverpool issued a statement stating that the club is "very surprised and disappointed" with the decision. Which I came to find quite shocking, usually an organizationwould try to put an end to the fiasco as soon as possible, they should of came out and apologized right away no matter if Suarez was right or wrong. It shows the public that you’re on top of the case, especially with such a touchy subject as racism but issuing that statement like that only prolonged the problem and gave Suarez the belief that he was innocent and had all time and right to fight thisfor as long as it took. It’s unacceptable for club as big and with all the history as Liverpool and with all the PR history they’ve have to endure, it’s unbelievable how Liverpool managed to slip up and cause negative press towards the club and player. Generally, "nigger" is not considered a racial slur in Latin America, often is a word of affection. It is difficult to establish whether thecomment was racist Suarez, since this word can have different meanings and connotations in the countries of the region. In Uruguay, and South America in general, common name "black" before the name or surname of a player. Anglo-Saxon society has exacerbated a guilt complex in relation to non-Caucasian ethnic groups, for it has never been able to mingle. Historically there has been no mixing of whites...
