Yep has won several awards for her novels for young people. His books are usuallyabout the lives of foreigners and minority groups, and they interweave their ownexperiences. Yep wasborn and raised in a black neighborhood, and was educated atSan Francisco's Chinatown, but did not speak Chinese. Not experience thetraditional American culture until he entered high school.
When Iwas a high school student, Yep began writing science fiction. At the age of 18he published his first story in a magazine of science fiction, and at the age of 23 hepublished his first novel, Sweetwater (Freshwater). His most famous work,Dragonwings (1975), recounts the experiences of a child who leavesChina to live with his father in San Francisco. In 1976, this novel was awardedtheNewbery Honor Book and won the Boston Globe / Horn Book Award in the fiction genre. One of the most acclaimed books of children's literature. Yep other famous works are Child of the Owl (1977), who also wonthe Boston Globe /Horn Book Award for fiction, the fairy tale The Imp That Ate My Homework (1998) and Dragon's Gate (1993), whichalso was awardedthe Newbery Honor Book.Highlights the work of most of its series, the Golden Mountain Chronicles, which documents the history of the fictional family Young, 1849, in China, until 1995, the United States. Received two Newbery Honor books in theseries, Dragon's Gate andDragonwings, the latter of which has been adapted into a play. Other highlights include the dragon book series and The Mysteries of Chinatown. In addition, Child ofthe Owl won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award in 1977 and The Rainbow People, a collection of short stories Yes based on Chinese folk tales and legends, received the same award in 1989. He was awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 2005 for hiscontributions to children's literature.
