Madonna of Chancellor Rolin

Madonna of Chancellor Rolin is one of the best and most detailed paintings of the Renaissance. It was made byJan van Eyck on 1435.  It is on display in the Musée du Louvre in Paris. It was located at first in Notre-Dame-du-Chastel in Autun, until itburnt down in 1793. Then it was moved to Autun Cathedral, and after a while it was finally moved to Louvre in 1805.

The size of this painting is66x62 cm. and the technique used is oil on wood. This is a technique that is very common in Jan van Eyck’s paintings. We can even say that heimproved that technique.

Madonna of Chancellor Rolin is a religious painting. It was made for Nicholas Rolin, who was the chancellor of the Duchyof Burgundy. He was a very arrogant person, so that is why van Eyck painted him staring at the Virgin, and that he is the same size as she is.In the painting we can see the Virgin presenting Jesus to Nicholas Rolin. We can also see that she is being crowded by an angel. At thebackground we can see a landscape of a city over a river. There we can find two peacocks that are a symbol of immortality and pride. They can mean thata very powerful man like Rolin might succumb.

In conclusion, I can say that Madonna of Chancellor Rolin is a one of the best masterpieces ofthe Renaissance. Also that it is an incredible work of Jan van Eyck. And finally, that it is very religious and represents a lot of things.
