Field Report #2

An effective teacher must possess many positive qualities that allow them to make a connection with their students and thoroughly communicate the information that they aretrying to teach. Throughout my elementary, middle, and high school years I was fortunate enough to have many effective and quality teachers. They all were able to present the information to their classin a way that made it easier to understand, but furthermore, they made a conscious effort to connective with their students and to make learning more than just memorizing facts and being tested onit.
The teacher that I have been observing is Jeff Nelson from Cesar Chavez elementary school. He teaches first grade and employs many techniques of an effective teacher. Furthermore, I can tellthat he has a true passion for children. In his lessons, he makes sure that all of the children are on the same page and understand what he is teaching to them. He uses the wait time to give all of thechildren the opportunity to arrive at the answers to his questions. He also introduces math and some languages arts concepts in a fairly informal way: the students will be sitting on the floor infront of him and he will be sitting on a chair explaining things like math, a story, or a play that they will be performing.
One of Señor Nelson’s best qualities that makes him a great teacher is histhoughtful and effective control that he has over his class. Each student has a job, which rotates each week, they are always organized in a line before entering class from recess, and he has createdlittle signs and symbols that each students uses to ask questions while not disrupting class (for example, if a child comes up to me in the classroom and puts their fist near their face and pointsbehind them with their thumb, they are asking to go to the bathroom).
