Reproductive efficiency andprofitability of weaned lambs in hair sheep production systems in Northeast Mexico
Abstract
The effects of season of lambing (EP) and parity (NP) on productivity in Pelibuey (Pb)and Blackbelly (Bb) ewes were determined under two production systems, an intensive (Mirasol, Guemez, Tamps., Mexico) and a semi-intensive (Cimarron, Llera, Tamps., Mexico)production system. In addition, the information on productivity of the intensive system (Mirasol) was used to determine the equilibrium point for the cost of the kg of lamb weaned(PEk). Parturition data from Cimarrón (1996 to 1998) and Mirasol (1997) were used to determine the effects of EP and NP on the number of lambs born (NC) and lambing (Pnac) andweaning weights (Pdest) in the two production systems. The productivity and the production costs (fixed and variable) in Mirasol were used to determine the PEk. The NC was notaffected by EP or NP, the mean NC was 1.48 lambs, the means for EP and NP varied from 1.35 to 1.67 and from 1.39 to 1.55 lambs. The mean Pnac was 3.63 kg, EP affected (P
