In the essay “The Hidden Life of Garbage” (2005), Heather Rogers argues that we should question our waste garbage. Thewriter provides examples, facts, background, about how the landfill is carrying out the waste destruction process, and the impact on our environment. Author’s purpose is to persuade us to reduce ourgarbage to make a better environment. This essay is for the entire community.
Rogers gives describes the beginning of trash collection in the first paragraph, to know that the waste is taken to the“transfer station” to unload, then the garbage goes to a place called “sanitary landfill”. (Paragraph two)Rogers states a fact that burial is a low cost disposal method in the U.S. Landfills are placesthe public is not mean to see, and are located in rural areas. Continuing with facts, (paragraph three) the author uses an exemplification that landfills are tucked way. If the people saw what happenedwith their waste, the may begin to ask questions to Waste Management Inc. The society waste unrestrained, they don’t have knowledge about landfills. The writers gives a description about where thedamping takes place (paragraph four), is called the fill’s “working face”. Heavy Machines work together in compacting waste. Trash is floating and the smell is sour. (Paragraph 5) the author gives anexemplification about the fill’s area. In Virginia there is a disposal fill with the capacity of one thousand football fields. New York dumps their garbage in Pennsylvania, biggest depository forexported waste. (Paragraph six) Rogers describes where WMI’s Delaware-side operation sits. It was the Warner Company used for extraction of different materials, now workers dump municipal wastes daily. Thelandfills capacity is 40 million pounds of wastes daily. (Paragraph seven) The writer describes the top of the GROWS landfill. The waste is taken to the “landfill compactor” looks like bulldozer...
