Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa (Italy) in 1451. His parents were Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarrosa. In his youth he felt love for marine life andworked in the merchant shipping in the Mediterranean Sea.
In the decade of 1470, came to Portugal where he married and had a son named Diego. In this country,he joined several expeditions along the coasts of West Africa that supported King John II. Here, too, conceived a project to find a sea route to China and Indiaacross the Atlantic Ocean, thought it was a "narrow sea."
By not getting the help of the Portuguese crown went to Spain, where he won the support of Queen Isabellaof Castile. After signing the Surrender of Santa Fe (April 17, 1492) organized his expedition in search of the Far East by sailing West.
On his first trip tothe island reached Guanahani (October 12, 1492) and called it San Salvador, explored the island of Cuba which named Juana, and came to the island of Santo Domingowhich he named as the Spanish. On this island fortress built Christmas, and returned to Spain believing they had reached islands off the Asian continent.Columbus made three more voyages, on his second voyage explored the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico and Jamaica, in the third, discovered the island Trinidad and the mouthof the Orinoco River, in the fourth, he knew the coast of Central America.
Until the end of their days stressed Christopher Columbus lands have reached the Asiancontinent. He died in Valladolid in 1506, unaware that he had discovered a new continent.
