Caleb Gattegno
(1911–1988) Alexandria, EgyptKnown for his innovative approaches to teaching and learning mathematics (Visible & Tangible Math), foreign languages (The Silent Way) and reading (Words in Color). Author ofmore than 120 books and hundreds of articles largely on the topics of education and human development.
He founded the Educational solution inc. company that copyrighted the Cuisenaire rods.
In 1988Gattegno died in Paris two weeks after having run the seminar Le mystère de la communication near Grenoble.
Gattegno’s idea of the usage of Cuisenaire rods and colored charts came from his previousexperience as a designer of mathematics and reading programs.

Learning Theory: Cognitive Psychology is the basis. Language learning is not habit formation. It is rule formation. Language learninghas a sequence from the known to the unknown. Students induce the rules from examples and the languages they are exposed to, therefore learning is inductive
Language Theory: Languages of the worldshare a number of features (e.g. every language uses subject, object; every language has adjective, adverb, verb ...etc.) However each language is unique. Language is for self expression (to expressthoughts, perceptions, ideas and feelings). "Cognitive Coding" helps learners learn the language. "Colour rods" and "Fidel Chart" are used for cognitive coding.
Principles:
1) Teachers have toconcentrate on how students learn and not on how to teach.
2) Imitation and drill are not the primary means by which students learn.
3) Learning consists of trial and error, deliberate experimentation,suspending a judgment, and revising conclusions.
