How does Tennyson create a desolate image of Mariana in the poem?
Tennyson, with this poem presents us to Mariana. Throughout the poem he describes Mariana's devastating way of life and the subhumanconditions in which this character lives in. The author uses describes various factors of the house, gardens and even of Mariana herself to involve as into the passage. In general, every aspectpresented in the poem is obscure and murky (the garden, the house) which demonstrates the deplorable state of the surroundings and pictures at once Mariana’s feelings. Throughout the extract Mariana groansand moans about how dreary her life is without her lover.

Color creates a seclusive picture of the garden which is directly related to Mariana's mood in the poem. "Blackest moss the flower plots"and "When thickest dark did trance the sky"The quotation describes the colors present in Mariana's surroundings, dark colors such as black are predominant in the atmosphere to create a sense ofdesolation which is in agreement with Mariana's state of mind. The author ephasices in superlatives such as "blackEST" or "thickEST" which makes the reader achieve a better picture of the house and thegarden. Overall we can certainly observe that the gardens are uniform there is a lack of vegetation which symbolises the isolation and lack of love Mariana feels.

Tennyson uses several gothicfeatures to create a sinister atmosphere and to show us the solitude and sorrow Mariana feels “After the flitting of the bats” the night animals surround the dubious sky at night with their envolving sounds.The “bats”, which are the main representatives of the night, are usually related with vampires, disguise Mariana in a much more gothic character, making her be also part of that gloom and obscuritythey represent. In conclusion, as she really missed her lover she conceals in the darkness of the night converting her in a depressing, bohemian and gothic character.
