Biography: Mark Twain
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by hi “pen name” Mark Twain, was born in Florida, Missouri, on November 30, 1835. When he was four years old, hisfamily moved to Hannibal, Missouri, near the Mississippi River. This was Twain´s inspiration for the setting of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “Adventures of HuckleberryFinn”. Since Missouri was a violent and a slave state, Mark got used to it and later it became an inspiration for his writing. When he was just 11 years old, his father died ofpneumonia; which made him start working at a very young age. A year after his father’s death, he became a printer´s apprentice and later became a printer and sometimes contributedfor the writing and editing of the Hannibal Journal. He lived in Hannibal until he was 17.
In 1857, at age 21, he made one of his dreams come true. He began learning how todrive a steamboat and two years later became a licensed pilot. He worked in the river and was very well paid. But then the outbreaks of the Civil War came and made the traffic in theriver unbearable, so he stopped driving steamboats. He began working as a newspaper reporter for newspapers all around the United States.
In 1870, Twain married OliviaLangdon and had four children, but only one survived.
He began to gain fame with his story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County” was in the New York Saturday Press inNovember 1865. “The Innocents Abroad”, his first book, was published in 1869, followed by "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" in 1876, and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in 1885. Hewrote 28 books and many short stories and sketches.
He suffered a heart attack on April 21, 1910 and died. His funeral was at the "Old Brick" Presbyterian Church in New York.
