Describe Cisco’s Strengths and Partner Benefits
Know the three customer needs that Cisco network solutions address. Read about these customer
needs on p. 1-4.
Know the history of Cisco as a company. See more on pp. 1-5–1-6.
Cisco’s business goal is to be thefirst or second most successful provider in each major market in
which it participates. For more information about Cisco’s business goals, see p. 1-15.
K now the three main factors that drive business decisions; see p. 1-20.
Describe the Borderless Networking Architecture
The three Cisco architectures are Virtualization, Collaboration, and Borderless Networks.
Understand the individualarchitectures and how they work together. Find more information on
pp. 1-24−1-25.
The seven layers of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model are as follows: Application,
Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data Link, and Physical. Memorize the layers, and
understand what occurs at each layer. Find more information on p. 2-5.
Bridges and switches operate at Layer 2, or the Data LinkLayer, of the OSI model. To learn what
bridges and switches do, the differences between the two, and the devices’ relationship to Media
Access Control (MAC) addresses, see p. 2-11.
Understand the purpose of a router. See more on p. 2-12.
Know the difference between local area networks (LANs), metropolitan area networks (MANs),
and wide area networks (WANs). Find more information on p. 2-16.Know that the four technologies that can be used to provide the transport services of a WAN are
leased lines, Frame Relay, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), and Metro Ethernet. Be able
