Mars in Mexico
Mars Mexico is comprised of three business segments that lead their respective markets: Chocolate, Petcare and Wrigley. Our brands include PEDIGREE®, WHISKAS®, CESAR®, SNICKERS®, MILKY WAY®, M&M'S®, ORBIT®, DOUBLEMINT®, SKITTLES® , LUCAS®, SKWINKLES® and HUBBA BUBBA® .We employ more than 2,000 Associates, and create approximately 12,000 jobs indirectly in our supply chain,obtaining annual sales of over $800 million dollars. Mars Chocolate Mexico is a market that has grown double digits during the past years, with excellent results and marketing more than 60 tons of chocolate in the past four years, with sales amounting to 200 million USD. Mars began operations in Mexico in 1991. We established our first Petcare factory in the Municipality of El Marqués, Querétaro, in1995, which has become one of the largest and most efficient Mars plants worldwide. In 2001, we acquired the LUCAS® brand, expanding our confectionery portfolio taking over its Monterrey production site. Along with our Querétaro and Monterrey plants, we now have dry and wet pet food factories in Poncitlán, Jalisco (2007) state and a chocolate factory in Montemorelos in Nuevo León (2008). Along withthis growth, Mars Inc acquired Royal Canin® in 2002 expanding its Petcare portfolio. Recently Mars Chocolate announced the opening of a new factory in San José Iturbide, Guanajuato which will be operating by the end of 2015.
Principles in Action
Through our principle of Mutuality, Mars Mexico participates in projects to help transform families' lives. Through our partnership with Mitz, anonprofit organization, Mars donates their left over packaging materials to Mitz so that the artisans can weave them into bags and other accessories using traditional weaving technics. Our Associates also support the artisans by sharing business knowledge and helping to improve their business strategies and profitability. The products are sold in M&M'S® World Stores and online, providing artisans with asteady source of income. Today, Mitz has five productive communities in marginalized areas and has created 240 jobs for underprivileged women. We have 65 direct beneficiaries who currently work on productive projects and 960 indirect beneficiaries. Our goal by the year 2020 is to support 500 Mitz artisans, providing 7,000 educational Scholarship and recycled 51.5 tons of paper. Talent wise,Wrigley is working to attract people with disabilities for both operative and administrative roles. We have created alliances with NGOs and Universities to find talented people with disabilities to compete for our job positions. Our target is to increase at least the number of Associates with disabilities to five percent of our headcount and that’s a number we are very close to achieve!
Wrigley Mexicohas also an in house Volunteer Comitee that since 2010 has been working all year long to help sustain the communities in which we are present. Between 2010 and 2011, Wrigley Mexico has raised more than US$60,000 in monetary and in-kind donations. Mars Petcare Mexico is committed to ensuring all dogs in Mexico have a home with a responsible owner; aware of the situation of abandoned and homelessdogs, in 2008 we launched the Pedigree Adóptame® program. Currently we work with 29 civil associations dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and finding loved homes for animals. We support them with food, counseling and training. Today there are more than 25,000 adopted dogs with a loving home and a responsible owner. In addition there have been more than 42,000 sterilizations, representing over 2million puppies that were born on the streets or neglect. Mars Mexico ranked number 4 among companies with 500 to 3000 employees on the 2014 Super Empresas list, published by Expansión Magazine. Additionally, out of all 511 companies evaluated, only 4 of them, including Mars, remained within the top 15 and improved their place in the ranking.
