This randomized controlled trial showed that acupuncture
during labor reduced the need for pharmacological
and invasive methods, mainly nitrous oxide,
pethidine, and sterile water papules, without affecting
birth outcome. We conducted the study because the
effect of acupuncture on labor pain was poorly documented.
All studies published before2002 were small,
retrospective, or uncontrolled (5–11), and only a few
randomized controlled trials have evaluated the effectiveness
of acupuncture for pain relief during labor
since 2002 (17–25). These studies vary in size and
quality.

Este ensayo controlado aleatorio mostró que la acupuntura
durante el parto reduce la necesidad de farmacológica
y los métodos invasivos, principalmenteóxido nitroso,
petidina, y pápulas de agua estéril, sin que ello afecte
nacimiento de resultados. Hemos llevado a cabo el estudio debido a que el
efecto de la acupuntura en el dolor del parto fue muy mal documentadas.
Todos los estudios publicados antes de 2002 eran pequeños,
retrospectiva, o fuera de control (5-11), y sólo unos pocos
los ensayos controlados aleatorios han evaluado laefectividad
de la acupuntura para el alivio del dolor durante el parto
desde el año 2002 (17-25). Estos estudios varían en tamaño y
de calidad.

The results are similar to those from Sweden (18)
and a study from Iran (22), whereas two other studies
(19,25) reported significantlylower scores in the acupuncture
group compared with the controls.

The duration of labor and the need for augmentation
with oxytocin were similar among the three groups.
Previous studies have shown inconsistent results with
respect tothese variables (19–22,25), but other secondary
outcomes showed either no or small differences of
little clinical relevance. Previous studies have generally
reported no differences for these outcomes (18–20,25).

The use of acupuncture
to manage labour pain was introduced in the
1970s.9–11 Since then, acupuncture has been employed to
relieve pain and facilitate the process of labour. A previous
systematic review of three trials of acupuncture for labour
pain suggested that acupuncture might play a role in pain
control, butbecause of the paucity of trial data, the conclusions
remained uncertain.
