Treating others as we would like to be treated. As one panel member noted, a problem is that wedon’t always model the best behavior of students, or provide them good examples in school curricula.
* Respect the value of effort, understanding the work ethic andneed for individual contributions, and self-discipline.
Students who will be successful in the 21st century will know the importance of making an effort or trying todo well. Without self-discipline, talents are squandered.
* Understanding and respect for those not like you- An appreciation of diversity.
The concept ofappreciating diversity cuts across all areas of this study, including the areas of knowledge and skill.
* Capability to work with others as a team member.Generally, teams combine workers from a variety of areas into a single unit to achieve a common goal.
* Taking increased responsibility for one’s own actions.
In manycases, people write off their responsibility by blaming others for failures.
* Respect for others and for authorities.
Respecting others is basic to a civilsociety.
* Commitment to family life, personal life and community.
A sense of community to reinforce family is critical in the formation of character.
*Willingness to civilly resolve disagreements.
* Recognition and respect for educators.
* Being excited about life and setting goals for lifelong learning.
