The Mayan languages form a language family spoken inCentral America. Mayan languages are spoken by at least 6 million indigenous Maya, primarily in Guatemala, Mexico, Belize and Honduras. In 1996, Guatemala formally recognized 21 languages by name, andMexico 8 more.
The Mayan language family is one of the best documented and most studies in the Americas. The modern Mayan language descends from Proto-Mayan, a language to have been spoken at least5000 years ago.
Today, the number of spoken mayan languages are 31. The majority of these dialects are very limited geographically, 95% of all indigenous mayans are bilingual speakers. That is, theyspeak their native dialect, and also Spanish.
Although there are like 31 mayan dialects spoken in Guatemala, only four of them comprise the majority of the Mayan population. The four largest dialectsare: Mam, Kekchí, Qhiché, and Calchiquel.
Mam came from the Marnean language family, which in turn came from Proto-mayan, it is spoken in Northern Guatemala. Both Quiché and Calchiquel came fromQuichean, which came from the earlier Greater Quichean, which originally came from Proto-mayan too.
Kekchí is mainly spoken in Belize, which just south of the yucatan peninsula. Kekchí was alse derivedfrom greater Quichean, which once again, came from Proto-Mayan.
