Task A
1.0 Evaluation and critique of Bizzy-Mart’s “Workplace Safety Policy and Procedure”
Bizzy-Mart is a petrol/ service station located in Chatswood on Sydney’s North Shore. The gas station has a busy drive-way where customers fill up their petrol and then walk to the store to finalise their purchase.
To evaluate and critique the policies andprocedures about Bizzy-Mart I should ask myself if Suzie Bigwell the OHS Specialist, didn’t forget to describe some important information at company’s “Workplace safety policy and procedure”, according to Workcover NSW.
According to Workcover NSW - Armed hold-ups and cash handling: Guide, staff should be made aware of the risks involved in cash handling and trained in:
• Cash handling procedures, such as pick up money and change tender.
• Emergency procedures and operation of security devices.
• Confidentiality about procedures and security devices.
• How to identify robbers.
• How to identify suspicious behavior.
As a gas station company exist many of hazards they must look with more attention, according to Workcover NSW - Health and Safety: dangerous goods:
* To provide adequatedistance between gas pumps and parking spots for customers who buy food.
* To provide adequate guards or barriers around gas pumps, to prevent the risk of explosion by car in out of control condition.
* To provide adequate space for vehicles to move safely on the gas station's property while customers are pumping their own gas.
* To locate pumps a safe distance from entrances andexits.
* Obligations to ensure the dangerous goods are correctly packaged and labeled.
* Remove the dangerous good or substituting for a less hazardous substance
* Ensuring the physical separation of dangerous goods from people and property by distance or physical barriers
* Ensuring any spills or leaks are contained and that incompatible substances are not stored together
*Removing sources of ignition or controlling the risks in hazardous areas
Also I compare Bizzy-Mart with Coles Express, another gas station company and in their safety policies and procedures I observed more concern with customers and team members, which I was able to prove as you can see below:
* Static electricity can ignite fuel vapors.
* Coles Express policy states that we will fillcontainers up to 25 liters and only approved containers. Fuel can “eat” or “melt” some plastics and also placed firmly on the ground, in the open air, for not increase the risk of fire or explosion.
* Smoking or lighters is prohibited at our sites.
* Mobile phones are potentially hazardous and must not be used on our sites. Please turn off.
* Switch off all internal combustion engines when...
