Book Review #1

In the book “The War for Mexico’s West, the author, Ida Altman, reached out to key factors that are never mentioned in history books, enriching the readers knowledge during thistime period, the well-known misery Indians suffered, triggered the unsuccessful rebellion from the Indians, events that dramatically change the perspective Spaniards had about the Indians. Essential tohighlight, the value the author gave to what happened after the fall of the Aztecs, instants that are frequently skipped, jumping into the establishments of the “Misiones” therefore “Encomiendas”leaving behind crucial year in the construction of Nueva España
The author uses many forms of relevant information, enforced with “story’s” for example chapter five, “The Indian’s War” is full of color,chronologically organized, giving precedence to each and every context of the War, this helps the readers to situate themselves in Mexico’s west during 1524-1550’s. The book is full of details, frommaps, images, to even passages from diaries and ancient books, data well used for explaining the complexity of the Spanish sovereign royalty in the New World, the reader can draw conclusions, onculture, traditions, to even how mistreated the Indians were. Altman, splits the book in after and before the war, dedicating a couple of chapter to the actual war, mainly focusing on displaying theinternal and external fought of power among the Spanish hegemony, parallel with the Indian rebellion,Although the rebellion was unsuccessful, The Indians gain support as the cruel punishments wereincreasing day by day, irreparable harm, calamities, the harsh captivity, death, support from Bartolome de las Casas who was a venerable defender of the rights of the indigenous, was not enough against sucheminent power.
