Smiths sponsor was King James I, King James wanted to conquer more land and have more money. King James also encouraged other explorers such as Henry Hudson and Walter Raleigh.
Smithbecame involved in plans to colonize Virginia. Smith set sail on December 20, 1606 an arrived in Virginia in April 1607. At least 150 people were part of this expedition, only men were included on thefirst voyage. There were survivers on the boats even though there were maybe 1 to 3 big storms during the crossing. There were 45 of the original 150 travelers that had died. When Smith arrived, themen and himself started building houses and cabins. The cold winters,lack of fresh water and disease made life very difficult in Jamestown. Smith was also a mapmaker, geographer, soldier, sailor,politician, merchant, and a writer. Jamestown was named after King James who had sponsored Smiths journey.
Smith and the other men went on a search for food. Smith and the other men were captured by NativeAmericans. Smith made a deal or a peace treaty with The Native Americans. The Natives and Smith became friends. When Smith and the colony began to settle in Jamestown, Indians had been living in thearea for thousands of years. The Indians who were living close to Jamestown were a tribe called the Powhatans. The leader of the Powhatans and his daughter Pocahontas began to establish a goodrelationship with Smith. The main motive of Smith was to get food for the colonist because they did not have a good food supply. Smith began trading with the tribe to get food although sometimes it wasn’tfriendly trades.
In 1608, a new settlers had arrived to Jamestown. Women were also included in the voyage. Jamestown was no longer a small camp, it had become a community were people could settle...
