Syllabus Summary
Student’s expectations:
The focus of the Speech 1315 course is to promote the success in the student’s academic and personal life by the use of effective ways of communication as: a listener, a researcher, interaction with small groups, public speaking and a development of a proper interview.
The student is expected to perform a minimum of 4 speeches, to know how to provide agood feedback to the audience, take the key notes on a lecture and to engage in other students’ communication assignments as well as to participate in a civic engagement activity in the community.
The student is expected to keep a high academic standing at UTB in order to meet the SAP (Satisfactory Academic Process) by the accomplishment of the following requirements:
Self-responsibility
Toattend to all sessions with a maximum of three unexcused absences during the entire semester, failing to accomplish with this requirement leads to a dismissal from the class and an F in the student’s grade book, any class tardiness counts as an absence unless the student counts with a proof of the delay.
All assignments are due before the following class or as otherwise stated with no exception.All the student’s work has to be done by him or herself, any act that gives an advantage to the student over others constitute an act of plagiarism, this will leads to an A.D. (Academic Dishonesty) and the perpetrator will receive be penalized with a failing grade for the entire semester and a possible expulsion from the UTB system.
Any make up for exams and assignments have to be documented withauthentic proofs, this should be done between three school days of the missed activity or absence.

Classroom Policy:
The student must have good classroom decorum, this includes but it’s not limited to interaction with the professor and the classmates, any side conversations are prohibited and each student will have a turn to speak, any electronic devices have to be turned off, the student canonly use a laptop to take notes during the class and walking out of the classroom unnecessarily is considered a violation of classroom decorum.
Any disciplinary action might lead to a dismissal from the class with an incomplete grade.

Grading Scale and Course Outcomes:
A: 90-100%, B: 80-89%, C: 70-79%, D: 60-69%, F: 59% and below.
Speeches: The student is expected to perform a minimum of 4speeches of different subjects such as to perform, persuade or for a special occasion, this part is crucial for the course because it represents the 60% of it.
Feedbacks: The student is expected to do a feedback to every speech presented by his or her classmates; this represents the 5% of the total value.
Civic engagement: Students have to participate in their community by providing a service;this grade represents the 5% of the course value.
Other activities: 10% as assigned by the professor.
Research paper: The students will complete a research based in an assigned topic by the instructor; this activity represents the 10% of the total grade.
Final exam: There will be one test over the elements of effective public speaking provided in lecture, discussions and examples; this activityrepresents the 10% total activities.

After completing the program, the students will be able to:
Deliver an effective speech to inform, persuade, provide helpful feedback, recognize key concepts, explain the process and give an effective ceremonial speech rated to a behavioral checklist in the class.
