Individual transport system
Introduction:
On February 10, 2011 Clear Channel, a United States, global media and entertainment radio company, founded in 1972; becomes theofficial owner of “ECOBICI”.
An environmental program located in Mexico City, with the objective of promoting physical activity, reduce environmental impact and reduce urban traffic.
OnFebruary 16, 2010 the secretary of environment forges “ECOBICI” a program that offers a short-term rent of individual transport, Bicycles.
Once in posses of a membership, customers may access to one ofthe 1114 units at the time within the 85 cycle stations, each one distributed with a maximum distance of 300 meters (0.18 miles), positioned within the colonies: Cuauhtémoc, Juárez, Roma Norte,Hipódromo Condesa and Condesa.
On October 29, 2011, five additional stations are installed within the Historic Center for a total of 90 stations and 1200 bicycles.
The system is active from 6:00am to00:30am, and it’s very easy to use, by passing your membership through a scanner a screen will tell you which bike will be unlocked and ready for you to use for the next 45min, each hour after thatwill automatically charge an additional 10$ and if the bike wont be returned within 24 hours there will be a penalty of 5000$.
In case of emergency you may call 5005-2424.
In order to obtain amembership you will need to fill up with some simple requests:
Be at least 16 years old or older.
Present any kind of identification (IFE or Passport).
Present any kind of credit card.
Registeryour address.
Pay an annual annuity of 300$.
Conclusion:
Similar programs exist in Spain, France, Norway, Switzerland and Italy; and to tell you the truth, they work really great, people arevery positive and interested in using this bough as a transport and a way of to workout to, plus, the membership costs less than a peso per day which is great if we consider the cost of gas nowadays.
