It's not difficult to get a fast and cheap meal these days. Since, there is a fast-food restaurant in everycorner of the United States. Fast-food has changed the way Americans eat and find jobs. In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food; in 2000, they spent more than $110 billion. People havebeen spending more on fast food than computers, education, movies and music. These fast-food industries are not what money is suppose to be going too, including since it's not healthy. Eating thesekinds of food causes obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. When McDonalds first started meat patties were made from fresh ground beef and fires were made from potatoes freshly peeled. Now meat comes fromfrozen hamburger patties and frozen fires just to keep the chain growing and having to have everything taste the same at every location.
In order to best maximize their profits, the big fast foodgiant's created the franchise system. This system allows the companies to maintain overall control of the product, and give them a guaranteed rate of return, while at the same time allowing local ownersto create a low-wage work force best suited to local conditions. For us, as workers, that means our immediate employers are often small business owners, and franchise owners who plead poverty when wedemand higher wages.
