What is history, historiography, and specifically African history? History are events that have passed and the events that are currently happening. History is critical for every personto know because the saying is if you do not know history you are doomed to repeat it. In this essay I am going to explain to you the reason for history, the challenges, and the specific challenges inwriting South African history.
According to E.H. Carr believes history before 1890 must be critically analyzed for accuracy. This is because before 1890 documenting history was extremely difficult,because historical accounts are given from an individual perspective and not from a societal perspective. He specially points out that history is typically written by the victors of war. If NaziGermany had defeated the United States in World War II the outcome and our perspective of the events of the war would be completely different. This ultimately leads to bias in ones beliefs and especiallyin a historical sense because many historians are biased when writing.
African history is one of many cultures that still to this day clash. In Africa one has many cultures that impacted thecontinent as a whole. If one takes a look at the history of Africa one could understand why Africa has so much civil conflict and turmoil in the area. The history of Africa shows a continent that was run bythe British, French, and Germans where the essentially divided Africa and left a citizen of their country to rule an African state. This ultimately caused many individuals in Africa to feel like theywere not being run by Africa but by some foreigner who does not know what is best for the African man. The societal history of Africa has been one of the “big man” where there are a few eliteindividuals and every other citizen is low on the totem pole.
