I. Vocabulary: Be able to define the following words and understand them when they appear in the novel.


Aloof – ata distance, away
Fawning - To exhibit affection or attempt to please
Apprehension - anticipation of misfortune; suspicion or fear of future trouble or evil.


Indignation – strongdispleasure at something offensive, insulting


Crestfallen – discouraged, sad


II. Literary Terms: Be able to define each term and apply each term to the novel.

Verbal irony – Acontradiction between what is said and what is meant (Similar to sarcasm)

Example: When George tells Lennie to, “Go jump in a lake!”

Symbolism – When one thing represents another and yet, keeps its ownmeaning
