“Operation cumbre”

How many of us continuously used phrases such as;” It is injustice”, “that it is unfair”, “there is no justice”, “justice is done”. How many of us act or show disagreement to events in which we don’t feel comfortable with or how many of us are willing to give our lives for our people, friends, relatives or future generation. In this essay I will focus ondescribing the live of tree outstanding women who gave up their live for their country. Three heroines, whom till this day, still loved and remember for their courage and whom I had the honor to meet through books, movies and journals. I will not focus on the monster that executed their horrible crime instead, I will focus on their lives, and how they fought for freedom and their contribution to theDominican Republic. Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal were three women of Ojo de Agua, small province of the Dominican Republic. These women had the courage to fight for political freedom in their country. They opposed firmly against one of most known tyrannies that had Latin America that of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo who was accused by the citizens of ordering the Mirabel’s imprisoned severaltimes and eventually brutally murdered on November 25, 1960.
The Mirabal sisters are also known and represented as the “butterflies” as this was Minerva’s secret a name and idea for their clandestine political activities against the regime.
Their first studies were in Ojo de Agua. Later, in 1938, Patria, Minerva, and another sister and only survival Adela Belgium alias Dede were sent tostudy at the Immaculate Concepción High School, in La Vega, Dominican Republic. Because of her age Maria Teresa who was only three years old stayed at home. Of the four sisters, Minerva showed that she came into the world with a prodigious intelligence and a notorious spiritual sensitivity; these factors made her a very attractive woman. Minerva also was into painting. All the Mirabal’s daughterswere beautiful, but Minerva’s beauty was legendary. She graduated from high school with excellent grade; in 1946 she participated as an actress in several plays and in other cultural activities where she acted as declamatory. In June 1949, Minerva and their parents were invited by the highest authorities of the province to attend to a party given in Santiago in the Palace of the governorate inhonor to the dictator Trujillo, invitation which marked the beginning of the tragic course for the whole family. Trujillo met Minerva Mirabal and he was attracted by her beauty. At that time Minerva had met the young communist leader Pericles Franco, one of the founders of the Popular Socialist Party, who had been in prison several times, and with whom she established so intimate friendship.Within a few days Trujillo had his eyes on Minerva and again the Mirabal family received another invitation to attend the inauguration party .On that occasion the dictator and his son Ramfis danced with Minerva. Trujillo took the opportunity to demonstrate his attraction toward Minerva, behavior that was not liked by the young lady and reason for why she stopped dancing.
When this third invitation wasreceived by the Mirabal family, her mother objected Minerva to attend the party, but after examining the political implications that such refusal might cause, they decided for her father, Patria, Minerva, and Dede’s husband Pedro González to attend. In this opportunity the Dominican tyrant “Trujillo” soon arrived and a focus on the young Mirabal. Despite of her dislike for him and knowing thedanger that rejecting him will cause to her and her family, she danced with him several times until he started to behave in a disrespectful manner that ended up with a slap from Minerva to Trujillo. According to the dictator the Mirabal family violated the rules and disrespected the government by leaving the party before him.
