They have developed an effective method to reconstruct words from brain waves of patients.
Someday, neuroscientists will be able to spy the constant internal monologues that take place in our minds, or may hear imaginary discourse of a patient with a stroke or with locked-in syndrome, a condition whereby the radical affected awake and aware but cannot moveor speak. At least, this is convinced researchers of the University of California, Berkeley, who have managed to reconstruct words from electrical brain activity of a subject. The work is published in the open access journal PLoS Biology.
Specifically, the scientists were able to "understand" the electrical activity in a region of the human auditory system called superior temporal gyros (STG,for its acronym in English). By analyzing the pattern of activity of these waves, could rebuild the volunteers heard words in normal conversation.
The finding "is very important for patients who have damage to the mechanisms of speech due to a stroke or Lou Gehrig's disease," says Robert Knight, professor of psychology and neuroscience at Berkeley. "If we can reconstruct the imagined conversationsfrom brain activity, thousands of people could benefit."
The research is based on a person hears sounds really, but to use this in a device-a machine that we translate the thoughts, these principles should apply to someone who is imagining speech, "warns Brian N. Pasley, also a researcher at Berkeley and lead author of the study. "There is evidence that perception and imagination can be verysimilar in the brain. If you can understand well enough the relationship between brain recordings and sound, could synthesize the actual sound that a person is thinking, or just write the words with some kind of device interface. "
Matched the word
Pasley tested two different methods to adapt to the pattern of speech sounds in the electrode activity. Patients hear a word and Pasley usedtwo different computer models to predict word based on recordings of the electrodes. The best of both methods was able to play a sound pretty close to the original word, so much so that the team could correctly guess the word better than chance. The computer model "can play the sound the ear of the patient and recognize the word, but not a perfect level," says Knight.
The ultimate goal of thestudy was to explore how the human brain encodes speech and determine which aspects of language are more important to understanding. "At some point, the brain has to pull out all auditory and map it in a word, because we can understand the language and words regardless of how they sound, 'says Pasley. "The big question is what is the most significant unit of speech? A syllable or phoneme? ».
Theresearch is a step in the struggle to help patients who cannot communicate with the outside, an incredible feat that is not without its ethical implications.
