This chapter refers about how a good English teacher should be, enumerating skills, qualities and features as well as exposing a variety of ideasand concepts about Language Teaching and education. It also details some issues as teacher´s personality and appearance, how should teachers communicate with students, how to manage a class, and how togive instructions.
In the first lines of the chapter, the author exposes opinions of some English students, teacher trainers and methodologists from different countries. They describe some commonfeatures of good teachers, as well as bad characteristics. The most common shown by they are the importance of making interesting lessons, captivating the attention of teachers without hiding theirpersonalities, as well as being entertainer and having lots of knowledge.
As regards communication between teachers and students, the author makes emphasis in the importance of using a comprehensiblelanguage. He introduces the concept of rough tuning, to refer to the unconscious simplification of the language and the use of exaggerated physical movements, used by teachers to be understood moreeasily by students.
The author also uses the concept of comprehensible input to refer to the fact that students should be able to understand what is being said by the teacher. It is also important totake account that teachers should use words and expressions which are slightly more complex than the ones used by students. This, in some way helps them to acquire new skills in the language.
Othertwo important concepts introduced are TTT (Teachers Talking Time) and STT (Student Talking Time) to refer to the right time where both of them use to talk. Boosting STT should be priority of teachers,though it is important to find a balance between STT and TTT.
